Percussive Massage Recovery
What does a massage gun actually do? We looked at published human studies examining percussive massage, range of motion, muscle stiffness, local blood flow, soreness and post-exercise recovery.
What is percussive massage?
A massage gun repeatedly applies rapid mechanical pulses to soft tissue. Instead of holding one constant pressure, the head repeatedly moves into and away from the muscle.
Researchers generally refer to this as percussive therapy or percussive massage therapy. Studies have investigated whether those repeated mechanical pulses can influence range of motion, tissue stiffness, local blood flow, perceived soreness and recovery-related measures.
The important part is that these outcomes are not all equally established. The strongest and most consistent findings currently relate to short-term changes in mobility and flexibility. Research into soreness and actual recovery of physical performance is more mixed.
At a glance
Human studies suggest percussive massage can acutely improve range of motion and may temporarily influence tissue stiffness, blood flow and perceived soreness. It should be viewed as a supportive recovery tool rather than a guaranteed shortcut to faster muscular recovery.
What does the research say overall?
A 2023 systematic literature review examined research specifically involving percussive therapy delivered by massage guns.
13 studies examined
The review examined outcomes including flexibility, muscle strength, explosive strength and experiences of musculoskeletal pain.
Promising doesn't mean guaranteed.
The research base is growing, but massage guns are relatively new compared with many established recovery interventions. Different devices and protocols can produce different results, so broad claims like “proven to cut recovery time in half” would go further than the current evidence supports.
The clearest signal in the research: short-term mobility.
One of the most frequently reported effects of massage-gun use is an acute increase in range of motion. Two controlled studies provide particularly useful examples.
Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion
A 2020 study tested 16 healthy men on two separate days. Participants either received five minutes of percussive massage to the calf or simply sat without treatment.
The change represented an 18.4% increase in maximum dorsiflexion range of motion. The control condition did not show the same change.
Importantly, maximal voluntary contraction torque did not decrease after treatment.

A 2023 study involving 20 participants compared percussive therapy to passive rest. The treatment consisted of two 60-second applications to the hamstrings with a short rest between them.
Researchers also reported a 6% reduction in measured tissue stiffness after the percussive treatment.
The authors concluded that percussive therapy could provide an acute increase in hamstring ROM alongside a decrease in tissue stiffness.

These studies support using percussive massage as a short-term mobility tool. They do not prove that increased range of motion automatically prevents injury or produces faster long-term recovery.
Researchers have measured what happens to circulation.
Claims about “increasing circulation” are common in massage-gun marketing. Unlike many broad marketing claims, one controlled crossover study actually measured arterial blood flow with ultrasound after localised percussion massage.
Eight different vibration conditions
Researchers tested control conditions and vibration frequencies of 30 Hz, 38 Hz and 47 Hz for either five or ten minutes on the calf.

The 38 Hz and 47 Hz conditions produced statistically significant increases in mean blood velocity and volume flow. Heart rate showed little change, suggesting the response measured was local rather than the result of a broader cardiovascular increase.
View the published blood-flow study →The study measured young, healthy, recreationally active adults using a specific massage gun and controlled frequencies. Increased local blood flow is a physiological response — it does not by itself prove faster muscle repair or guarantee better recovery.
Can percussion help when your muscles already feel sore?
A 2024 study examined repeated percussive massage after eccentric exercise designed to create exercise-induced muscle damage and delayed-onset muscle soreness.
17 participants after eccentric exercise
Participants performed 60 eccentric elbow-flexion repetitions. Nine participants received one minute of percussive massage immediately after exercise and again at 24, 48 and 72 hours. Eight participants rested without the treatment.
The treatment group returned to its pre-exercise range-of-motion value faster than the control group. Percussive massage also repeatedly provided immediate, temporary relief in perceived soreness.
However, the researchers did not find evidence that percussion accelerated soreness recovery until the 72-hour measurement, and it did not improve isometric strength recovery.

A treatment can make a muscle feel less sore or easier to move without necessarily restoring strength faster. RecoveryX therefore positions the massage gun as a tool for working over tight and tired muscles — not as a guarantee that damaged muscle tissue has fully recovered.
The evidence isn't one-sided.
If we're going to call this an evidence-informed recovery tool, the studies that did not find a benefit matter just as much as the studies that did.
Repeated treatment after DOMS
The 2024 eccentric-exercise study found improved range of motion and repeated short-term reductions in perceived soreness following one-minute treatment sessions.

A separate 2024 study involved 65 active adults and applied a massage gun to one calf for five minutes immediately after strenuous lower-body exercise.
Result: No significant recovery advantage was found for ROM, calf size, isometric strength, endurance or perceived soreness.Timing may matter.
The 65-person study found a small increase in perceived soreness in the massage-gun leg immediately and four hours after recovery compared with the control leg.
The researchers concluded that five minutes of massage-gun use immediately after strenuous calf exercise appeared to have little effect on physical recovery measures and advised caution with that specific immediate post-exercise protocol.

Newer research is beginning to investigate protocols beyond the very short applications used in many earlier studies.
Physically active young men with induced DOMS
A 2025 randomized study divided 30 physically active male college students into three groups after a squat protocol designed to induce delayed-onset muscle soreness:
The researchers measured soreness, knee range of motion, countermovement-jump performance and neuromuscular measures across the following 48 hours.
The authors concluded that percussion massage was more effective than static stretching for recovery in their protocol, with two 40-minute treatments producing greater benefits than the shorter 25-minute sessions.

Here's where the evidence starts — and where it stops.
What we can reasonably say
- Percussive massage has human research behind it.
- Multiple studies report acute improvements in range of motion.
- Some studies report reductions in measured tissue stiffness.
- Localised vibration can temporarily increase local blood-flow measurements under specific protocols.
- Some post-exercise studies report temporary reductions in perceived muscle soreness.
- Repeated treatments may have recovery applications, although results vary by protocol.
What we should not promise
- That every massage-gun session speeds muscle repair.
- That the RecoveryX device has clinically proven recovery outcomes.
- That using the highest speed produces better results.
- That percussion consistently restores strength or performance faster.
- That increased blood flow automatically means faster tissue recovery.
- That a massage gun replaces sleep, nutrition, sensible training or professional treatment.

A study using a different massage gun cannot be treated as a clinical test of RecoveryX simply because both products use percussion. Frequency, amplitude, pressure and treatment protocols need to be considered separately.
Keep the routine simple.
Choose the right head
Use the ball or flat head across larger muscle groups and more focused heads where appropriate.
Begin at a lower speed
Start with a comfortable setting rather than immediately jumping to maximum percussion.
Stay on the muscle
Glide slowly across soft muscular tissue rather than pressing directly into bones, joints or the spine.
Don't force pressure
Let the massage gun do the work. Stronger pressure is not automatically more effective.
Keep individual areas brief
Around 1–2 minutes per muscle group is a simple RecoveryX starting point rather than staying over one location for an extended period.
Use comfort as your guide
The sensation can feel firm and noticeable, but it should not become sharp, painful, numb or uncomfortable.
The hardest setting isn't the best setting.
The research uses a wide range of protocols, and there is no evidence that simply increasing intensity always produces greater recovery benefits. Choose the lowest setting that comfortably achieves what you want from the session.
Percussion isn't suitable everywhere.
Massage guns are designed for muscular soft tissue. Avoid treating areas where repetitive mechanical percussion may be inappropriate.
What the science actually tells us.
Percussive massage is supported by a growing body of human research, but the evidence base is still relatively young.
Short-term improvements in range of motion and flexibility are among the most consistent findings.
Some studies have measured temporary reductions in tissue stiffness and increases in local blood-flow measures.
Percussive massage may temporarily reduce perceived post-exercise soreness, but feeling less sore does not necessarily mean strength has fully recovered.
Post-exercise recovery findings are mixed and appear to depend heavily on timing, duration, device settings and the protocol being used.
